Content and Capacity

At the heart of life, there are two fundamental ways we can use our minds. In the first approach, we get caught up in the constant flow of thoughts, feelings, and sensations – what could be called the “content” of the mind. This content includes any mental experience, whether a thought, emotion, bodily sensation or perception of the outer world. When our attention is fixated on this mental content, we lose touch with the simple ease and stillness always available to us.

The second approach involves making one simple change – relaxing back into the spacious awareness – capacity – that is the very essence of mind itself. Rather than being absorbed by endless streams of mental content, we recognize that all thoughts, feelings, and perceptions arise within the open intelligence of consciousness. This open intelligence is like the vast, clear sky in which all passing clouds of experience come and go.

To glimpse this directly, pause and leave thinking alone for a moment. Notice the awareness that remains, pure and present, even in the momentary absence of thoughts. You are still vividly aware but free from any conceptual overlay. Yet this same spacious intelligence also allows thoughts to arise when needed and enables us to perceive and engage with life.

Whether our minds are brimming with activity or utterly silent, spacious intelligence is always here, patiently awaiting our recognition. By learning to relax back into this fundamental ground of being, we align ourselves with the natural ease at the heart of experience. The choice to make this simple change is always available – even right now.
